How the flu jab actually works.
The flu jab is a single injection of an inactivated vaccine, which means it cannot give you flu. It teaches your immune system to recognise the flu strains expected this season, so if you catch one of them your body fights it off faster and the illness is much milder.
How effective is it?
The flu jab cuts your risk of catching flu by around 40 to 60 percent in any given season, and significantly reduces the risk of serious illness, hospital admission and death from flu — especially in older adults and people with long-term health conditions.
When does it work from?
Your immune system takes about two weeks to build full protection after the jab. The protection then lasts through the rest of the season. Because the flu virus changes year to year, you need a fresh jab each autumn.
Side effects are usually mild. A sore arm for a day, sometimes a mild temperature or tiredness, often nothing at all. Serious reactions are very rare. We give you clear aftercare advice and what to look out for.
Flu jabs are seasonal.
A new vaccine is formulated each year to match the strains expected that winter. We typically vaccinate from early September through to March, with availability tailing off in April once stock expires. Between May and August we are out of season — the new batch hasn't arrived yet. If you'd like a reminder when bookings open, leave your details and we'll get in touch.

Who carries out the flu jab?
Flu vaccinations at Medicine Stop are administered by a trained vaccinator from our pharmacy team, under the clinical oversight of the responsible pharmacist. Every vaccination is given in our private consultation room.
Are there any common side effects?
Most people have no issues. Mild side effects can include a sore arm, slight tiredness or a mild temperature for a day or two. Serious reactions are very rare. We give you clear aftercare advice.
Can I have a flu jab if I'm pregnant?
Yes. The flu jab is recommended in pregnancy and is free on the NHS at any stage. We can give it to you here once we have confirmed your details.
