Eligibility
Is period delay right for me?
Period delay is generally suitable for healthy adult women who would prefer to push their period back for a holiday, a wedding, a sporting event, an exam or a similar occasion. It is not a long-term contraceptive, and it is not suitable for everyone.
It is usually suitable if:
- You are 18 or over with a fairly regular menstrual cycle
- You want to delay your period by up to around 17 days
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
- You can take the tablets starting three days before your period is due
It is generally not suitable if you have, or have had:
- A history of blood clots, deep vein thrombosis or stroke
- Certain hormone-sensitive cancers, such as some breast cancers
- Severe liver disease
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding
- Certain other medications that interact with the treatment
The pharmacist checks all of this at your consultation. If we cannot supply, we explain why and suggest the right next step for you.

How does period delay work?
Period delay uses a short course of progesterone-based tablets that keep the lining of the womb stable, so your period does not start while you are taking them. You usually begin three days before your period is due and stop when you want your period to come, with bleeding starting a couple of days after the last tablet.
How long can I delay my period?
The medication is generally licensed for delaying your period by up to around 17 days. If you need a longer or more complicated plan, the pharmacist will talk you through your options at the consultation.
Is period delay safe?
For most healthy women a short course is generally well tolerated. It is not suitable for everyone, which is why we always do an in-person assessment. The pharmacist reviews your medical history before deciding whether to supply.
How far in advance should I book?
Ideally book one to two weeks before your event so you have your tablets ready. Same-day consultations are often available if you need it more urgently, but you do need to start the tablets three days before your period is due.
Are there any side effects?
Most people have no issues. Mild side effects can include bloating, breast tenderness, headache or low mood for a few days. We explain what to expect and what to look out for at your consultation.
Who is the service not suitable for?
The medication is generally not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of blood clots, stroke or certain hormone-sensitive cancers, have severe liver disease, have unexplained vaginal bleeding, or take certain other medications. The pharmacist checks all of this at your consultation.
What happens if the pharmacist cannot supply it?
If the service is not clinically suitable for you, the pharmacist will explain why and suggest alternatives, including talking to your GP. The consultation is free, and covers the assessment either way.
How much does it cost?
The consultation is free. If the pharmacist prescribes medication, the cost of the tablets themselves is confirmed at your appointment before you commit. There are no hidden charges.
Who will I see at my consultation?
Your consultation is with a GPhC-registered pharmacist who is also an Independent Prescriber. The conversation takes place in our private consultation room, never at the open counter.
Will my visit show on my card statement?
Your card statement shows a standard Medicine Stop pharmacy charge. It does not show the service or any clinical detail. Your consultation is recorded only in our secure clinical record.
